Understanding the Culture of Poverty Oct 02, 2012 - Oct 03, 2012
This two-day workshop will offer the participants an opportunity to consider the realities of what it means to live in poverty. Through the research of Dr. Ruby Payne, Ph D, this compelling and interactive workshop provides a foundation to understand the variables that sometimes interfere with achievement and success for the community of poverty. Drawing upon personal experiences, participants will leave with strategies for effectively engaging with the community of poverty. Participants will analyze the eight resources for success: explain language registers, discourse patterns, and story structure, give examples of hidden rules among classes, identify discipline interventions that are effective, explain mediation and cognitive structures, explain how economic realities affect patterns of living. Participants will have a chance to develop these resources into strategies and best practices during a workshop setting as well.
