The new Common Core State Standards will require schools to comprehensively support student learning so students meet these enhanced expectations and reap the results of preparation for competition in a global economy. Beyond the classroom, this requires a system-wide integration. Our district/site leaders must be poised to become the central figures with the comprehension and vision surrounding implementation. They must gain a deep understanding of all that is involved and be able to guide their staff.
With Common Core implementation, an administrator also must be prepared to observe how well a teacher integrates Common Core concepts and skills into their lesson plans. In order to do this, an administrator not only needs understanding as to what Common Core lessons involve, but what effective instruction and student mastery look like.

The intent of these meetings is for a group of District Science Leaders to come together to learn about science assessment, science data, grants, instructional materials, research-based strategies, CDE updates, upcoming events, hands-on activities, and to network over important science topics. We will have guest speakers from “science outlier” schools describing their programs that were identified in the science data analyses. Other timely topics are discussed at the participants’ request.
We envision that a structure will be in place for these leaders to come back and share this information with other science teachers. A “District Science Leader” is a teacher, department chair, or administrator who has been identified by the district office as their designated science representative. Each district may identify up to one elementary, one middle, and one high school representative. Additional representatives will be required to pay a $20 fee per meeting to cover the cost of lunch and materials.

Lesson Observation Focused on Engaged Learning and Explicit Language Development
Teachers serving English Learners in any K-12 context are in dire need of frequent, targeted and practical feedback on instruction, but observation criteria in widely-used tools range from extremely general and irrelevant to unwieldy.
This workshop equips administrators and instructional coaches with a user-friendly and vetted walk-through protocol focused on explicit language development and structured student engagement. Data on long-term English learners in California highlights these students tragically low level of lesson engagement and chronic under-performance.
Dr. Kinsella will begin the session by providing a synthesis of the current research base with regard to English language development and extract five guiding principles to inform instruction. She will demonstrate explicit and accountable student engagement and language use through a brief hands-on lesson and recent video footage obtained from exemplary classrooms.
Participants will observe video clips for evidence checks of effective language instruction and engaged student responses. The presenter will address common “missed opportunities” for structured English Learner engagement and language acceleration from her routine classroom observations and provide extensive exemplars of actionable feedback. Colleagues will leave with practical observation tools and a collection of Dr. Kinsella’s most frequent and productive lesson feedback.
