Teachers from San Bernardino County and surrounding areas are able to train as Historical Literacy Coaches or be involved as participating teachers. Following the institute teachers attend professional development release days, some Thursday evenings, some Saturdays and one required weekend field trip to be chosen by the participants at either the Museum of Tolerance in September or the Japanese-American Museum in December. A third field trip is being arranged and will be announced soon. The program will be a yearlong intensive experience designed to deepen content knowledge and pedagogical skills. All teachers involved will have the opportunity to:
Deepen their historical knowledge of the Constitution and the early Federal period of US History based on the California State Standards for History-Social Science by working with local and nationally known scholars
Learn and practice effective history/social studies and literacy strategies integrating educational technology
Share and learn best practices by participating in a community of practice around historical thinking
Receive and read historical monographs, Gilder Lehrman curriculum, and access to eSOURCE and ePortofolio
Coaches will have the opportunity to:
Begin training as an instructional coach focusing on historical literacy
Become leaders among other educators in the Inland Empire
Become a professional development resource for school sites and districts
